- Description
- Sotheby's is honoured to present the extraordinary collection of Françoise Mayer and Marc Sohier. The works in this collection form an ensemble of rare coherence, giving pride of place to abstraction, research into American Abstract Expressionism, Spatialism and Kinetic Art.Following in the footsteps of Iris Clert for New Realism and Denise René for Kinetic Art, the Françoise Mayer Gallery was a key promoter of new artistic research and a fundamental support for the artists it presented. The Gallery first opened its doors on 19 November 1966 in Brussels, with an inaugural exhibition devoted to Alexander Calder. Françoise Mayer’s career as a broadcaster and producer of cultural television programmes in Belgium enabled her to meet artists and collectors of Contemporary Art. Over the ten years of the gallery's existence (1966-1975), twenty-eight exhibitions by major artists followed one after another: Lucio Fontana, Jesus-Rafael Soto, Alexander Calder, Pol Bury, to name but a few.Composed largely in the 1960s and early 1970s, this collection bear witness to the couple’s discerning eye, and personal links that Françoise Mayer and Marc Sohier forged with the artists who accompanied them and played a part of their daily lives through the decoration of their Brussels flat as the couple lived at the rhythm of the gallery's programme. The couple's were quick to recognise artists who have become major figures in contemporary art today. As well as supporting Belgian talent, Françoise Mayer, through her gallery, also played a pioneering role in introducing to the Belgian market European and American artists who were little known at the time. For assistance with bidding and registration, please contact | Pour obtenir de l'aide pour vous enregistrer et enchérir, veuillez contacter:enquiries@sothebys.comFrance +33 (0) 1 53 05 53 48UK +44 (0)207 293 5000US +1 212 606 7000HK +852 2524 8121For sale enquiries, please contact | Pour tout renseignement, veuillez contacter:Aurélie VandevoordeVice President FranceCo-head of Modern and Contemporary Art DepartmentSenior Director, Senior Specialist+33 (0) 1 53 05 53 56AURELIE.VANDEVOORDE@SOTHEBYS.COMThomas BompardVice President FranceCo-head of Modern and Contemporary Art DepartmentInternational Senior Specialist+33 (0) 1 53 05 53 91THOMAS.BOMPARD@SOTHEBYS.COMEmmanuel Van de PutteSenior DirectorManaging DirectorSotheby's Belgium+32 26 27 71 95EMMANUEL.VANDEPUTTE@SOTHEBYS.COMGwendolyn GroligDirector, Specialist Contemporary ArtSotheby’s Belgium Luxemburg+ 32 (0) 2 627 71 93GWENDOLYN.GROLIG@SOTHEBYS.COMDamiane PestreCataloguerContemporary Art+33 (0) 1 53 05 53 02DAMIANE.PESTRE@SOTHEBYS.COMStefano MoreniVice President FranceSenior DirectorSenior International Specialist Paris+ 33 (0) 1 53 05 53 38STEFANO.MORENI@SOTHEBYS.COMOlivier FauVice-President, FranceHead of Private Sales, Continental EuropeInternational Specialist Paris+33 (0) 1 53 05 53 60OLIVIER.FAU@SOTHEBYS.COMEddie HautchampHead of Evening SaleDirector, SpecialistContemporary Art+33 (0) 1 53 05 52 76EDDIE.HAUTCHAMP@SOTHEBYS.COMIsobel GooderHead of Day SaleDeputy Director, SpecialistContemporary Art+33 (0) 1 53 05 52 57ISOBEL.GOODER@SOTHEBYS.COMPauline DeschampsAssociate CataloguerContemporary ArtPAULINE.DESCHAMPS@SOTHEBYS.COM
