The sale is spearheaded by two remarkable collections of porcelain. The first is a museum-quality collection of figures from the'Peoples of Russia' and 'Traders and Sellers' series from the period of Catherine the Great(1762-1796). The reign of Catherine II is widely recognised as a golden age in Russian history. This series of porcelain figures, designed by Jacques-Dominique Rachette (1744-1809), is the prime example in art of the Empress's patriotism and understanding of her diverse people through a collection which showcased their differences. The second major collection jumps forward to the period of Nicholas I (1825-1855), under whose patronage production at the Imperial Porcelain Factory flourished. Lot 218, a large ormolu-mounted porcelain vase,is a fine example of the Imperial Porcelain Factory's artists' unmatched ability to render painting on to three-dimensional objects. With the front painted after Franz van Mieris the Elder'sOyster Eaters(executed 1659, recorded by Andrei Somov, curator of the Imperial Hermitage, in his catalogue of the collection,no. 916) and the reverse meticulously painted with a gothic design reminiscent of cathedral stained glass windows, this vase is testament to the factory's unmatched reputation throughout Europe and across centuries. Also dating from this period, we are thrilled to present no fewer than eight porcelain plates from the Military Service), each finely painted with a range of figural and equine portraits by some of the factory's greatest painters. The sale also includes five further plates from this service dating to the period of Alexander III.Further forward in time still, our selection of Soviet porcelain is led by a Soviet porcelain figural group 'Radio for the Village', the original piece made by Naum Kongiserfor theArt of the Peoples of the USSRexhibition in Moscow, held in 1927 in honour of the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.Following on from our successes with enamels in 2023, we will be offering another impressive selection of enamels, ranging from a magnificent pictorial centrepiece and bratina by Nikolai Tarabrov from an Important Private Collection, United Kingdom, alongside other enamelled works by the masterful Feodor Rückert, a richly enamelledimperial presentation kovsh by Agafanovand much more. The icons section is also highlighted by finely enamelled works by Russia's most reputable craftsmen including Ovchinnikov, Postnikov and Kurlyukov, as well as silver, Art Nouveau iconsbeautifully chased by Ivan Alekseevand Sergei Zharov. The sale also features a curated selection of works from two highly significant collections of panel icons: the Loverdos Collection; and that of Dmitry Apazidis, who 'devoted all the passion of his soul to collecting icons' (S. Yamshikov). As usual, the sale also includes a vast selection of Fabergé vertu, silver animals and jewels, silver and glassware, bronze sculptures and hardstones which will be on view from 22ndto 26thNovember in our New Bond Street galleries. Alongside our exhibition for this sale, we will also be exhibiting an impressive ormolu-mounted porcelain vaseby the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, also from the period of Nicholas Iand finely painted after Marguerite Gérard'sThe Model(1798-1800), which will be included in part I of our forthcoming sale of Treasures in London on 4thDecember.Banner image:Porcelain figures from the 'Peoples of Russia' and 'Traders and Sellers' Series, period of Catherine the Great (1762-1796), estimates ranging from £12,000 to £30,000Calendar image:Three Fabergé jewels, estimates ranging from £6,000 to £12,000For assistance with bidding and registration, please contact:Bids.london@sothebys.com(+44) 207 293 5283 (bids general line)For all sale enquiries please contact:Kira Gurmail-KaufmannAssociate Specialist, Fabergé Russian Works of Art+44 (0) 207 293 5515KIRA.GURMAIL-KAUFMANN@SOTHEBYS.COMReto BarmettlerConsultant | Russian Art+41 44 226 22 20RETO.BARMETTLER.CONSULTANT@SOTHEBYS.COMHelen Culver SmithInternational Head of Silver, Fabergé Russian Works of Art, Vertu and CeramicsHELEN.CULVERSMITH@SOTHEBYS.COMSinead RampersadDepartment Assistant, Decorative Arts+44 (0) 207 293 5134SINEAD.RAMPERSAD@SOTHEBYS.COM
