<p>FRANCIS I, KING OF FRANCE. Three letters signed (“Francoys”), to Jean de Selve, president of the Parlement de Paris</p><p><br></p><p>A GROUP OF THREE LETTERS BY FRANCE'S GREAT RENAISSANCE MONARCH.</p><p><br></p><p>Jean de Selve (1475-1529) was a prominent lawyer and trusted advisor to Francis I. He was president of the Parlements of Rouen and Bordeaux and then in 1520 he was appointed first president of the Parlement de Paris. These letters relate to the judicial and administrative affairs that were overseen by this body. Jean de Selve was also the father of Georges de Selve, one of the sitters in Holbein’s <em>Ambassadors</em>.</p><p><br></p><p>i) Concerning the estate of Jehan Jourdain, countersigned at the foot by Jean le Breton, 1 page, small folio (260 x 213mm), Lyon, 10 May 1522, integral address panel, docketed, some remains of red wax to verso, small sealing slits. (Damp staining, pin holes to left margin from previous binding.)</p><p><br></p><p>ii) Ordering Antoine le Viste, Sieur de Fresne, to remain in Paris (“…ne bouger de Paris et faire ce que vous luy ordonnerez pour mes affaires…”), countersigned at the foot by Florimond 1er Robertet, 1 page, small folio (253 x 205mm), Lyon, 20 June 1522, integral address panel, docketed, sealing slits. (Light spotting, some remains of previous mount on verso, pin holes to left margin from previous binding.)</p><p><br></p><p>iii) Ordering the release of a prisoner being held in Paris on the payment of a fine (“…Jay esté adverty que Angoulesme herault darmes est detenu prisonnier en mon Chastellet de Paris sept moys a, pour raison de quelque bapterye ou il sest parcydevant trouvé…”), countersigned at the foot by Jean le Breton, 1 page, small folio (253 x 200mm), Lyon, 22 June 1522, integral address panel, docketed, sealing slits.
